Davis Tzu Ching (Tzu Chi Collegiate Association, UCD)
Events
If you
would like to attend any of these events, please contact the VP. More
details in the contact section.
Breakfast Distribution (Every
Sunday Morning at 8:30AM-9:30AM) Checklists,
directions, and cooking instructions
We go to Sacramento every Sunday morning to serve food and the
talk to the
homeless and low income community. We do this in a lot near the
Salvation Army on N 12th Street. We always serve about 70 servings or
more of hard-boiled eggs, bread, cheese, bananas, and juice.
Sometimes we would also serve special dishes and desserts (e.g.
lasagna,
mash potatoes, pansit, lumpia, pancakes, grilled cheese sandwiches). We
cook all of these foods ourselves, usually on Saturday night, and that,
too, is another way to help. Occasionally we distribute clothes in
addition to food, especially during the winter time, where we give out
over 100 packages of warm clothing and blankets. Attending
this event for several years have allowed us to learn more about these
people's lives, issues, and much more.
Davis Summer House (Any day, but most attend on the weekends, at 3-4 or
4-5pm)
Located on 8th Street near Pole Line, the Davis Summer House is
a residence for the developmental disabled. We go there to teach them
social skills while having fun through activites, such as playing board
games, coloring, talking, and watching tv. Some of the residents don't
have friends and family who visit very often, so when we are there, we
are their family. Because of this aspect, we do ask that you commit
yourself to attending continuously. They will remember you and will
want you to return. First-time attendees will also need to be
accompanied by someone who is currently attending, so they can guide
you and make sure you're not just a random stranger.
Free Haircuts (Every last Sunday of
the month around 9:30AM~11:30AM)
After
Breakfast Distribution, we head over to the Salvation Army to provide
free haircuts to anyone who can't afford one. Some of these people need
to look presentable for interviews and the like, and we help them
accomplish this. We either assist the professionals or give people full
shaves if we don't have any experience.
Recycling (About twice a month during some weekday or Friday)
This club is environmentally friendly, so we help clean the
environment by promoting recycling. What we do is ask that everyone
keep their aluminum cans, glass bottles, and plastic bottles that
contain the CRV. We do a pickup around Davis to gather the recycling
and then sell them. All profits go back to fund our service events. We
do ask to please clean out your cans and bottles if they're not sealed,
to avoid any spillages. Crushing aluminum and plastic is optional, but
would also be greatly appreciated, since it will save loading space.
Mentoring (1 hour minimum a week,
available Mon-Fri)
We mentor
kids in Woodland for the WJUSD. We are currently
group mentoring after school and lunch. Starting Fall Quarter we will
move on to one-on-one
mentoring. As a mentor, you will be giving advice, tutoring, or just
spending quality time with the kids (e.g. playing sports).
Requirements: Submit application,
do an interview with the coordinator, TB test, background check,
arrange rides.
Medical Outreaches (About once a
month, check upcoming events)
We assist doctors and patients in the free clinics for the
income community that Tzu Chi provides in various California locations.
Translators are usually needed, too.
Gift of Books (Near Every end of
Spring Quarter, check upcoming
events)
With the help of Sacramento Tzu Chi, we help package around 600 books
for distribution to each student at Del Paso Elementary School in
Sacramento. On the day of distribution we give the children a
presentation/performance, which have included story-telling, singing,
and a martial arts demonstration.
Supplies Distribution (Winter time, check upcoming events)
Like Gift of Books, but instead of books, we distribute school
supplies such as backpacks, rulers, pencils, folders, etc to students
of Del Paso Elementary.
Blood Drive (Random Dates, around
June, July, September during the
weekday, check upcoming events
in home)
We sometimes sponsor BloodSource during their campus drives.
During the blood drives, they need volunteers to register people or
serve refreshments to donors. Those who donate contribute to limited
supply of blood that is needed everyday to save lives. Both volunteers
and donors will each receive a free t-shirt.
Social Events
(Twice a quarter)
We do have worry-free fun, too. We can do stuff like Social
Science Tag, Games Night, karaoke, ice-skating, broom-ball, bowling,
and more.
Culture Events
(TBA)
To learn the the
customs and traditions of Tzu Chi, we sometimes have workshops and
retreats to learn. These include sign-language, flower arrangement,
calligraphy, and tea ceremony.
